Best Career Guidance in Limerick

I get asked some version of the same question every week, usually by a Limerick parent standing at my office door at 4pm: "Who do I actually go to for proper career guidance around here?" And I never have a clean answer, because the honest one is — it's genuinely hard to find, and it's not because nobody in Limerick cares. It's because the system itself doesn't give schools enough to work with.

The maths behind why your school counsellor is stretched thin

This isn't a Limerick problem specifically, but it hits Limerick schools the same way it hits every non-fee-paying school in the country. According to the Institute of Guidance Counsellors' own submission to the Department of Education, the current staffing model works out at roughly one guidance counsellor for every 583 students in a non-DEIS school. In their most recent national survey, 92% of school-based guidance counsellors said they simply didn't have enough time to meet student need — up from 83% just a few years earlier. That's not a Limerick school failing its students. That's one person trying to do a job that was built for a fraction of the caseload they're actually carrying.

I say this as someone living it: I love this job, and I still can't give every student in my school the hour they deserve. There aren't enough hours in the year to do it properly at that ratio.

So people look outside the school — and Limerick prices are no different to anywhere else

The natural next step is private career guidance, and it exists in Limerick — there are good, qualified people doing it. But it isn't cheap anywhere in the country. Private career coaching in Ireland typically runs €80 to €200 per session, and most people need three to six sessions to get real value out of it. For a family already stretched by the cost of the Leaving Cert year, that's a genuinely difficult ask — and it means the students who most need structured guidance are often the ones least likely to get it privately.

What I actually tell Limerick parents to do first

Before anything else, go free. CareersPortal.ie and Qualifax.ie — Ireland's official National Learners' Database — are both excellent for browsing what's actually out there: every CAO course, every PLC, searchable by subject, by points, by college. I send students to both constantly. What neither one does is tell a student which of those hundreds of options actually fits who they are. They're brilliant search engines. They're not guidance.
