Best Career Guidance in Kerry

Kerry has a shape that makes career guidance harder than in a lot of counties — a long, spread-out geography, a tourism-heavy local economy with genuinely seasonal work, and secondary schools that can be a serious drive apart from each other. Add all that to the national guidance shortage every county is dealing with, and it's no wonder Kerry parents tell me they don't know where to actually turn.

The same stretched ratio, just harder to reach because of the geography

The Institute of Guidance Counsellors gave this a real number in their submission to the Department of Education: non-DEIS schools work out at roughly one guidance counsellor per 583 students. Their most recent national survey found that 92% of school-based guidance counsellors say they don't have enough time to meet student need — up sharply from 83% a few years before. A Kerry secondary school is working that same ratio, but with a wider catchment and, often, less easy access to college open days, career fairs or in-person events that students in more central counties can get to without much trouble.

And private guidance doesn't get any cheaper just because you're further from Dublin

Private career coaching in Ireland runs €80 to €200 per session nationally, and most people need several sessions to see real value. In a county where a lot of household income is tied to tourism and can vary sharply by season, that's a genuinely hard cost to plan for — and it's on top of everything else the Leaving Cert year already asks of a family.

What I tell Kerry parents to do before spending a cent

Start with CareersPortal.ie and Qualifax.ie, Ireland's official National Learners' Database. Both are free, both are genuinely excellent for browsing every CAO course and PLC in the country. I recommend both to every student I see. What they don't do is tell your child which of those hundreds of listed options actually fits who they are — that's a completely different question.
