Best Career Guidance in Galway

Galway parents ask me this constantly, usually at open evenings: "We've the university right here, we've the medtech companies hiring — why does nobody seem to have time to actually sit down with my daughter and figure out what she should do?" And the honest answer is that having a good university and a strong local job market doesn't fix the guidance problem at all. That's a completely separate system, and it's stretched everywhere, Galway included.

The ratio your school is actually working with

The Institute of Guidance Counsellors laid this out plainly in their submission to the Department of Education: non-DEIS schools are staffed at roughly one guidance counsellor per 583 students. Their most recent national survey found that 92% of school-based guidance counsellors don't have enough time to meet student need — up from 83% a few years earlier. That's the reality in a well-resourced Galway secondary school just as much as anywhere else. One person, hundreds of students, and a Leaving Cert calendar that doesn't leave much room to fix it.

I've said this to enough Galway parents now that I'll just say it here too: it's not that your school doesn't care. It's that the job was never resourced to give every student the time they actually need.

Private guidance is out there — Galway prices track the national average

There are good private career coaches working with Galway families, but the cost is the same story as everywhere else in the country: €80 to €200 per session, usually needing several sessions to be worth doing at all. For most households, that's a genuinely significant spend during a year that's already expensive.

Free tools first, then the piece that's actually missing

Before anything paid, use CareersPortal.ie and Qualifax.ie, Ireland's official National Learners' Database. Both are free and excellent for browsing every CAO course and PLC available, and I point every student toward both. What neither can do is tell your child which of those hundreds of options genuinely fits their interests and strengths — they're a directory, not a diagnosis.
