Best Career Guidance in Dublin

Dublin parents assume, reasonably enough, that with so many schools and so much choice, career guidance should be easier to come by here than anywhere else in the country. It isn't. If anything, Dublin gets the worst version of the national problem: the same overstretched school system, but with the highest private-guidance prices in Ireland layered on top of it.

The same ratio, just spread across a lot more students

The Institute of Guidance Counsellors' submission to the Department of Education puts the current staffing model at roughly one guidance counsellor per 583 students in a non-DEIS school, and their most recent national survey found that 92% of school-based guidance counsellors say they don't have enough time to meet student need — a figure that's climbed sharply from 83% a few years before. Dublin schools, including large, well-run ones, are staffed on exactly the same ratio as everywhere else. There are simply more students behind that ratio in a city this size, which in practice means longer waits and shorter appointments.

I say this as a guidance counsellor myself: it's not that Dublin schools are worse at this. The system gives every school in the country roughly the same impossibly thin slice of time, and Dublin's sheer scale makes that thinness more visible, not less.

And private guidance costs more here than anywhere else

Private career coaching runs €80 to €200 per session nationally — and that same source specifically notes that Dublin sits at the higher end of that range. For a family already dealing with Dublin's cost of living, adding several private sessions at the top of that scale on top of everything else the Leaving Cert year costs is a genuinely hard ask, and it means the guidance gap in Dublin often comes down less to availability and more to what a family can actually afford.

What I tell Dublin parents to do before spending anything

Start with CareersPortal.ie and Qualifax.ie, Ireland's official National Learners' Database — both free, both genuinely comprehensive for browsing every CAO course and PLC in the country. I use them with every student and I always will. What they don't do is tell your child which of those hundreds of listed options actually fits them.
