Best Career Guidance in Donegal

Every county in Ireland has a career guidance problem, but Donegal has a version of it with an extra layer on top: geography. If a Dublin family wants to pay for a private career guidance session, there's a coach a short drive or a Luas ride away. If a Donegal family wants the same thing, the nearest option might be a couple of hours away, or online only — and that's before you even get to the cost.

The system doesn't give Donegal schools any more than anywhere else

This part isn't specific to Donegal, but it's worth being blunt about it because I don't think enough parents know the actual numbers. The Institute of Guidance Counsellors' submission to the Department of Education puts the current staffing model at roughly one guidance counsellor per 583 students in a non-DEIS school — and in their most recent national survey, 92% of school-based guidance counsellors said they don't have enough time to meet student need. A guidance counsellor in a Donegal secondary school is working the exact same impossible ratio as one in Cork or Dublin, except they're often also covering a much wider geographic catchment, with students commuting long distances and less access to extracurricular career events, open days, or in-person college visits without a serious drive.

Add distance to the cost, and private guidance gets even harder to justify

Private career coaching in Ireland runs €80 to €200 per session regardless of where you live. In a lot of the country that's a stretch. In Donegal, it's often a stretch plus a round trip, or a video call that costs the same as an in-person session would anywhere else while still not solving the "who do I actually turn to locally" question.

Free first, then something built for exactly this gap

Start with CareersPortal.ie and Qualifax.ie — Ireland's National Learners' Database. Both are completely free and genuinely thorough for browsing every CAO course and PLC in the country, wherever it's based, which matters a lot for Donegal students who are often looking well beyond the local ATU campus for the right fit. I tell every student to use both.
