Best Career Guidance in Cork

Cork is an odd place to struggle with career guidance, when you think about it. You've UCC and MTU both in the city, a huge multinational tech and pharma employment base, and more choice of course and career path than most counties in Ireland. And yet I hear the exact same complaint from Cork parents that I hear everywhere else: nobody has the time to actually sit down with their child and work out what fits them.

It's not your school's fault — it's the ratio they're working with

The Institute of Guidance Counsellors put a hard number on this in their submission to the Department of Education: the current staffing model gives non-DEIS schools roughly one guidance counsellor per 583 students. Their most recent national survey found 92% of school-based guidance counsellors say they don't have enough time to meet student need — a figure that's climbed steadily, from 83% just a few years before. Cork schools aren't an exception to that. A big, well-resourced school in Cork city still only has the same handful of guidance hours to split across hundreds of students in exam years.

I'll say the quiet part out loud: I have colleagues in Cork schools who are excellent at their jobs and still can't get to everyone. It's not a competence problem. It's a capacity problem, built into the system itself.

Private guidance exists — it's just genuinely expensive

Cork does have private career guidance and coaching available, same as Dublin or Galway. But the price doesn't change much by county — private career coaching in Ireland generally runs €80 to €200 per session, and most people need several sessions before it's worth much. For a lot of Cork families, that's simply not realistic on top of everything else the Leaving Cert year costs.

Start free, then get specific

My honest advice, always: start with CareersPortal.ie and Qualifax.ie, Ireland's official National Learners' Database. Both are free, both are genuinely excellent for browsing the full landscape of CAO courses and PLCs by subject, points or region. I use them constantly and I'd never tell a student to skip them.

What they can't do is tell your child which of those hundreds of listed courses is actually right for them. That's a different problem, and it's the one CourseCompass was actually built to solve.
